Most people with Hashimoto’s and thyroid disease who are on the holistic path are well aware that they have to reduce their exposure to environmental toxins in order to heal. These environmental toxins (such as BPA, parabens, formaldehyde) found in everyday items such as plastics, personal care products, furniture and mattresses are endocrine disruptors which essentially means they ‘disrupt’ the endocrine system and all the organs and processes involved in this system…
And what system is the thyroid gland in? …
… The endocrine system.
As Dr Izabella Wentz says: “…any toxin in great amounts can have an adverse reaction on our thyroid gland, which is our very own environmental sensory gland.”.
However, only in recent months did I realise that there is a different type of toxin in our environment that we should also be concerned about. This is the type of toxin which comes from electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).
Dr Izabella Wentz states that people with Hashimoto's and other chronic illnesses such as Lyme disease are much more likely to develop a EMF sensitivity. This can lead to worsening of symptoms and autoimmune 'flares'.
I hadn't really looked much into EMF exposure and its connection to our health until a couple of months ago when I listened the Broken Brain podcast, ‘The Growing Concern with Electromagnetic Radiation and Frequencies with Dr. Carlos Ritter.’ This podcast completely opened my eyes to what we are exposing ourselves to on a daily basis without a second thought. It is well worth a listen. Here is the intro description for the podcast below:
‘In the beginning of his career as a neurologist, Dr. Carlos Ritter began to notice a peculiar similarity in stage 2 of sleep between some of his patients and those with chronic illnesses across the board—it was some sort of toxin messing with the body. After years of research in biology, neurology, and physics, Dr. Ritter came to understand this toxin could be coming from an invisible source all around us: electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs).’
I genuinely used to think EMFs were safe. After all, why would it be allowed to be rolled out across the world if it wasn’t safe? And the answer to that is - it can, and it did. Dr. Ritter said that the regulations around this haven’t been updated since 1970. We are now in 2020… Is it just me, or is that insane?!?! Again, as I have learnt from my own health journey, I have realised that we have to be our own health advocates - we can’t wait for regulations or ‘studies’ etc to catch up. The good news is that after listening to Dr Ritter’s interview on the Broken Brain podcast, there seems like there is a lot we can do as individuals to at least minimise our exposure to these harmful toxins. I go into these later in this article.
After listening to this podcast, I decided to do a little more research on the subject and O…M…G… I found so much. It actually got really overwhelming and I began questioning ‘why have we not been informed about these health hazards?’
We knew about the danger of EMFs as far back as 1957 - In the book ‘Biological and Medical Aspects of Electromagnetic Fields’, physics professor Ben Greenebaum and bioengineering professor Frank S Barnes described how humans absorb EMFs and how they are hazards to health.
Jumping forward to 2017 - there was an scientific appeal warning about the effects of 5G on human health which was signed by more than 180 scientists and doctors from 35 countries:
“We recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry...RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.”
In 2018, there was a paper written and compiled by Martin L. Pall, PhD (Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University) warning country leaders of the effects of EMF’s in general - to human health and to our environmental health. He claimed that this will happen with the current levels of radiation and will only be sped up by the introduction of 5G. Pall’s final paragraphs from this paper were extremely powerful and so I wanted to share them with you:
“The European Commission has done nothing to protect European citizens from the very serious health hazards and the U.S. FDA, EPA and National Cancer Institute have done nothing to protect U.S. citizens. The U.S. FCC has been worse than that, acting in wanton disregard for our health.
Let me close, as follows. There have been certain points in our history where people have stood up to strong destructive forces against what often appeared to be insurmountable odds. Those people are THE most honored people in our history. The people who failed to do so are among the most despised people in our history. I am not at all sure we will have historians to record us 100 years from now or even 30 years from now, given the direction in which we are heading. But if we do, rest assured that these are the standards by which we will all be judged.”
According to the Environmental Health Trust, peer reviewed research studies on Radiofrequency radiation have found the following affects on human health:
• Sperm damage
• Altered brain development
• Neurological symptoms
• Hormone changes
• Memory problems
• Sleep problems
EMFs have an accumulative effect on health. How it effects you depends on how much previous radiation exposure you have had, for how long, plus your lifestyle and any current medical conditions. Everyone’s body will react differently - in the same way that those with autoimmune disease have different symptoms and have different triggers.
EMF’s can destroy restoration pathways in the body, damage DNA and therefore cause mutations over time. This is something we are exposed everyday, 24 hours a day.
This is why those with autoimmune disease need to be especially careful with the amount of exposure.
Dr Ritter explained that the industry (technology companies) only use ‘studies’ funded by themselves. One study they are using says that if you are exposed to only ONE source (ie a cell phone tower), it will take a healthy human 20 years to see an effect such as a chronic illness. But this study is flawed as we are exposed to more than just one type today. The industry (technology companies) say there is nothing to worry about and that short-term exposure for a healthy human shouldn’t have an effect. But our exposure today isn’t short-term. It’s long-term. It’s accumulative. Most people are exposed to wifi and their mobile phones 24-hours-a-day. We are exposed to multiple frequencies today. Plus many people are living with chronic illnesses and are not informed about the health risks.
We must scrutinise scientific studies - are they independent or are they paid for by a company who is profiting off these technologies? Do they have a hidden agenda? We need to look for and demand for independent studies. (See the end of this article on how we can request this.)
How to protect yourself from EMFs / Radiation exposure
It is impossible to be a part of society today without being exposed to EMF's. The only real way to protect us (especially from emerging new frequencies like 5G and 6G) will be to build homes from scratch with built-in ‘shielding’ technologies. Or to get our homes fitted with this specialised ‘shielding’ technology. But this will be expensive and isn’t likely to happen any time soon, and so we have to make the best of what we already have.
Fortunately, according to Dr Ritter, there are a few things that we can all do in our own homes to help reduce our exposure to EMF’s.
The main thing we can do is to prioritise reducing exposure at night when we sleep (this is when DNA repair and regeneration happens). The best time to give the body a break to from radiation exposure. We can do this by:
Either taking our mobile phone out of the room, OR putting it on airplane mode, and away from our head when we sleep.
Turning the WIFI router off at night.
Take out anything that it plugged into the sockets next to your head (even lamps etc) as this can expose you to ‘dirty electricity’.
If you REALLY want to reduce your exposure to EMFs, then you could go to the master switch box in your home and turn off the electricity for the bedroom when you sleep. Some people could go even further and switch everything off apart from essentials (like the fridge etc).
The main things we can do to reduce our exposure during the day are:
Have your WIFI router as far away from you as possible (if you are spending hours in your office working for example)
To really reduce your exposure during the day, plug in your laptops etc directly into the router via ethernet cables and turn off WIFI altogether at the router. (remember you must actually turn it off, many can be done online by entering in your password. It took me a while to find out how to do mine. Google it if you're unsure.)
Use a wired keyboard and mouse (instead of ‘wireless’ to limit exposure to Bluetooth)
It is even possible to purchase an ethernet cable for your iphone so you can plug that in directly into the router.
Be more mindful of where you are placing your phone - keep away from your body as much as possible (not in trouser pockets, breast pockets etc).
Use headphones and loud speaker when talking on the phone (try not to hold too close to your ear).
When you’re not using your phone, switch to airplane mode (this may not be practical if you are waiting for a call or working but whenever you can this makes a difference).
Try not to use your phone inside the car - the radiation gets amplified as you are essentially sitting inside a 'metal box'.
What else can you do to help protect the health of you and your loved ones?
